Cuthbert and the Night Walkers [Interview]
Sydney’s
Cuthbert and the Night Walkers are seven talented musicians by the names of Richie Cuthbert, Brendan Walsh, Dan Rooney, Irena Tasevska, Lauren McKinnon, Giulia Polito and Nat Marti. The group began back in 2007 and along the way have won the hearts of all they have performed for. Over the years the band has changed dramatically in both size and dynamic including, at one point, even having an entire choir as part of their elaborate ensemble.
In 2007 CATNW really started getting noticed after they won JJJ’s unearthed and were given the opportunity to play at the Great Escape Music Festival. “It was fantastic, we were in this shed and it was kind of raining so all these people ran in and they didn’t know us at the time, but it just created this really great vibe”
From onstage antics to crazy costumes (borrowed from Giulia’s old work) these guys put on a show that kind of looks a little like a five year olds birthday party minus the creepy clown.
"I've steadily fallen in love with them. From dress-up costumes to epic but equally nonsensical songs, they represent all that is right about the music scene on the other side of the world…” DrunkenWerewolf UK Issue 9
CATNW released their debut “Love Needs Us” in 2008, which boasted Sydney favourites “Red Frogs” and “Newtown”. The Bands most recent album “Mr Pickwick's Camera”, recorded in Melbourne’s Woodstock studios was released back in October and has been receiving rave reviews.
"‘Mr Pickwick’s Camera’ is a remarkable album, one which I couldn’t compare to anything else. It was difficult to find any gripes about the music, and I have no qualms about giving ‘Mr Pickwick’s Camera’ two thumbs up!" Scene Magazine
You can catch these guys performing at The Famous Spiegeltent as part of Sydney festival. Best of all its FREEEEEEEEEEE!!
Massive apologies for the video quality! Anyone want to buy me a video camera?
Gigantic thank you to Giulia for taking the time out her busy schedule to let me interview her!!!
